A Free Crochet Blanket Pattern for YOU!

The Citrus Stripe Blanket is my gift to you, because I am grateful for you! This blanket is perfect on so many levels.

Here are just a few reasons why I love it.

 It is:

  • Perfect for a beginner
  • Perfectly striped--who doesn't love stripes?
  • Perfectly drapey
  • Perfectly easy to adjust the size/dimensions
  • Perfectly simple--a pattern that doesn't 'strain the brain'
  • Perfectly speedy project for one you need by Christmas
  • Perfectly versatile color options--with more or fewer or NO stripes
  • Perfect for a gift for anyone

I decided to make it from these fruity, delightful colors because they make me happy. But you could make it in colors that are subdued and neutral, or match a nursery or bedroom.
It is made from sport/DK weight yarn with a 4mm hook. The specific yarns I used are from Hobby Lobby and very affordable.
Baby Bee Sweet Delight (4oz/115g; 377yds/345m; 60% acrylic, 40% polyamide) in the following colors:
  • Carrots (A) 1 ball
  • Mint Charm(B) 3 balls
  • Naked (C) 1 ball
  • Babygold (D) 1 ball
  • Limeade (E) 1 ball

And...

Bernat Baby Sport (10.5oz/300g; 1077yds/984m; 100% acrylic) in the following color:

  • Baby Taupe (F) 1 ball

A couple of notes about the pattern:

  • If you wish to make a different size blanket, simply work the starting chain to the desired width in multiples of 3+2.
  • All joining is completed with a slip stitch to the designated stitch.
  • When changing colors, fasten off the old color and draw the new color through on the final yarn over of the last stitch of the row.
  • The height of individual stripes can be altered, if desired, by increasing or decreasing the number of repeats of the pattern row (Row 2).

Gauge is not critical to this pattern as there is plenty of yarn. The finished blanket dimensions including the border are: 32" (81cm) X 42" (107cm).
The stitches used (US Terms) are:
  • ch = chain
  • RS = Right Side
  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • picot = ch 3, slip stitch in 1st chain
  • sk = skip
  • rep = repeat
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • Rnd = Round
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Blanket Pattern:

With A, ch 152 or to desired width in multiples of 3 + 2

Foundation: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn

Row 1: ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in first st, sk next 2 st, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, sk next 2 sts; rep from * to within last st, 2 dc in last st, turn

Row 2 (pattern row): ch 3, dc in first dc, (dc, ch 1 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to within last 3 sts, sk next 2 dc, 2 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn

Row 3: Rep Row 2

Row 4 (final row of each color): ch 3, dc in first dc, 3 dc in each ch-1 sp across to within last 3 sts, sk next 2 dc, 2 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, change color (See Color Table), turn

Row 5 (first row of each color): ch 1, sc in first dc, *ch 5, sk next 5 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * across, ending with last sc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn

Row 6 (second row of each color): ch 3, dc in first sc, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-5 loop, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next sc; rep across, ending with 2 dc in last sc, turn

Rep Rows 2, 4, 5, 6 for each stripe. The difference in height of each stripe is due to more or fewer repeats of the pattern row (Row 2). Refer to the Color Table below for guidance on each row. NOTE: Some stripes will omit the pattern row (Row 2) entirely—marked in red in the Color Table as there are only 3 rows—the first, second and final.

End repeat with Row 4, changing to C for border. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Color Table:

Border:

Rnd 1: (RS) continuing with C, ch 1 (does NOT count as a st), in corner st (sc, ch 5, sc)—corner made, [*ch 5, sk 5, sc in next; rep to corner, make corner, ch 5, using ch-5 to measure distance along rough side without pulling ch complete sc; rep along side to next corner, make corner] rep around omitting final corner, join to first sc

Rnd 2: sl st to ch-5 space, *ch 3 (counts as dc), picot, dc, picot, dc, picot, dc, picot, dc—corner made in ch-5 sp, (dc, picot, dc) in each ch-5 sp, (dc, picot, dc) in each sc; rep around, fasten off and weave in ends

I've been working frantically in the background on several other things, but my Design Wars project is FINISHED!! I can hardly wait for you to see it! Oh, wow! This has been so much fun so far.

Here's a little glimpse at something I've been working on when I just need the rhythm of crocheting without thinking--a simple linen stitch piece--maybe a cowl? It's making the most beautiful piece of colored fabric. I really love it. I'll share more details if/when I finish this one.
